College Credit Plus Earth and Environmental Sciences Credential Program

This program in teaching Earth and Environmental Sciences is designed to provide the graduate-level credentials to allow high school teachers currently holding an Ohio AYA license in science to teach college-level science courses in their high schools through College Credit Plus (CCP). In addition, teachers completing this program will meet the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) standards for eligibility to teach courses in Ohio public community colleges and universities. The program can be extended to a Master of Science in Teaching (Earth Science) degree.

Admission Requirements and Process

Secondary science teachers who wish to pursue the teaching credential/certificate must follow the steps below:

  • Apply through Wright State's Graduate School. The options for applying to the CCP certificate and credential programs are in the online application.
  • Submit proof of current Ohio AYA License in Integrated Science
  • Submit an official transcript showing the award of a master’s degree in any field, unless from Wright State

The application form must be completed with all the required documents attached. The form when completed must be signed and dated. All application materials become the property of the Graduate School and cannot be returned.

Program of Study

Students must complete the following program of courses. All courses are existing courses and are offered regularly online during the regular academic year or as short field-based courses during summer. Subject to university policy, the department may accept transfer credit for relevant graduate coursework.

Four required academic year online courses (three credits each):

  • EES 6010 Astronomy for Teachers
  • EES 6150 Global Change for Teachers
  • EES 6230 Introduction to the Ocean
  • EES 6480 Plate Tectonics

Three courses from the following intensive summer field courses (two credits each):

  • EES 6010 Caves, Rivers, and Earthquakes
  • EES 6170 Field and Laboratory Study of Coastal Processes
  • EES 6400 Glacial Geology
  • EES 6410 Physical Geology and Natural History of Ohio

Total: 18 credit hours

Course Format

All academic year online courses with the exception of EES 6010 Astronomy for Teachers are asynchronous, that is, participants do not need to be online at the same time, but there are firm due dates for individual and group assignments during the semester. EES 6010 Astronomy for Teachers has a regularly scheduled online class time on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. Summer field-based courses are usually structured to include a four-day field trip and a pre-trip and a post-field trip classroom session.
