Lake Campus Honors Top Scholar Graduate As Commencement Speaker

Transferring to the Lake Campus was the best decision Gwyneth Elking every made.

CELINA, OH – Wright State University Libraries proudly unveiled the recipients of the prestigious 2025 Top Scholars award. This annual recognition celebrates one graduating senior from each college and the Lake Campus who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and embody the university's core values of inclusivity.

To qualify as a Top Scholar, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.6, be on track to graduate in the spring, and exemplify the mission, vision, and values of Wright State University. The deans of each college and Lake Campus carefully select these outstanding individuals.

In its 31st year, the Top Scholars award provides each recipient with a certificate of recognition. Additionally, in a meaningful tribute to their academic accomplishments, a book is purchased and added to the University Libraries' permanent collections in their honor. These books are thoughtfully chosen from within the student's major field of study by the libraries’ collection management team. Each book features a special bookplate inscribed with the student's name, college, and award year, ensuring their legacy is preserved within the library's catalog. Wright State University and the Friends of the Libraries jointly fund this esteemed award.

This year, the university is delighted to congratulate seven exceptional students who have been named 2025 Top Scholars. Among them is Gwyneth Elking, representing the Lake Campus.

Elking is a nursing major and chose the book: Rural Healthcare and the Pandemic: Challenges, Solutions and Future Needs by Judith Paré, Dayle Sharp, and Polly Peterson.

“She is a fantastic leader amongst her peers, and I know she will be a fantastic nurse once she graduates. She excels both academically and in skills demonstrations. She goes beyond understanding the material and skills and truly applies them over various settings and situations,” said Lynn Franck, Director of Nursing at the Lake Campus.

Reflecting on her Wright State journey, Gwyneth shared, "After graduation, I will earn my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a minor in psychology. During my time at Lake Campus, my potential has blossomed due to my student clinical/externship experiences, research involvement, and leadership positions in the WSULC Nursing Organization and Psychology Club."

Looking ahead, Gwyneth is eager to embark on her professional career as a Registered Nurse in an ICU within a Premier Health hospital.

Elking was invited to provide remarks to her fellow graduates at the 2025 Commencement Ceremony held on May 1, 2025. In her remarks she told the audience that transferring to the Lake Campus was the best decision she ever made.

In her speech she showed her gratitude to Lake Campus Professors, Lynn Franck and Dr. Josh Ricker.

“You both made an indescribable impact on my life these past 4 years, and I will be grateful for the lessons and skills you have taught me for the rest of my life,” said Elking.

“May you be proud of the work you do, the person you are, and the difference you make,” is advice Elking shared with her fellow classmates at commencement.
