Lake Campus Hosts First Annual Mercer-Auglaize Science Day

Parkway Middle School Science Project off to State Finals

CELINA, OH – Parkway middle school students, Jace Armstrong, Skyler Fokine, Colin Fokine are excited about moving on to the State Science Day Finals in May of 2016. In February of 2016, the middle schoolers earned a 'superior’ rating at the First Annual Mercer-Auglaize Science Day hosted at the Lake Campus of Wright State University.

For their project, the Parkway students used principles of physics and engineering to evaluate the effect of wind on an airborne drone. In order to get to the State Finals, the students had to compete with 14 other projects at the First Annual Mercer-Auglaize Science Day Competition held at Wright State University - Lake Campus in February. After receiving ‘Superior’ rating, the students qualified for the District Science Day, which was held at Ohio Northern in March. That event brought together the best science projects within nine counties in Western Ohio. After receiving another ‘Superior’ rating there, the team is off to the State Finals at The Ohio State University to compete with more than 1000 of the best student-scientists in Ohio.

Jace Armsrong, team member says, "It was the best feeling I ever had getting a superior rating at the local and district science fairs. I can't wait to go to the state science fair in May!"

Their mentor and teacher Barb Shellabarger shares their excitement as well. According to her, “the science fairs have been a great learning opportunity for my students and I look forward to bringing more students next year.”

Other schools participating in the Mercer-Auglaize Science Day were Coldwater Middle School and Minster Elementary. The local Science Day event is part of the State Science Day competition organized by the Ohio Academy of Science since the 1940s to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.
