Associate of Arts in Communication Studies

On this page:

Why Choose Communication Studies?

You will study how humans create, transmit, receive, and respond to messages. The communication studies program will help you better understand intrapersonal and interpersonal communication and apply them to a variety of contexts, including interpersonal, organizational, and mediated settings. Your courses will underscore real-world experiences with theoretical frameworks. Students will gain important job skills as well as a strong academic foundation in the field of communication. Employers seek persons who have excellent written and oral communication skills; are able to effectively work in teams with diverse members; can demonstrate strong listening skills; and, are able to provide effective leadership.

This program mirrors the first two years of the four-year program at the Dayton Campus. You can transfer seamlessly to that program or nearly seamlessly to many other four-year programs at Wright State University.

Careers

The associate of arts degree in communication studies is a two-year degree. It is a gateway for completing a four-year bachelor's degree or entry-level employment in the public and private sectors. Real-World Experience

The program will offer practical learning experiences and training in public speaking, making business presentations, leadership skills, interpersonal communication, small group communication, mass media, and organizational communication. Classes are theory-based, but you will begin or enhance your personal communication skills through classroom activities and assignments.
